PAST INDUSTRY Before the eco-revolution of late 20th Century, chemical plants abounded in the Parry Sound Area.
This 1915 photograph from the archives of the West Parry Sound District Museum shows cordite workers posing for a picture outside the Canadian Explosives Limited (CXL) plant in Nobel. The CXL plant produced gelatin and cordite during World War One and contributed greatly to the Allied war effort. Most of the employees were women as they had to work in the factories since the men had left for war. After the war, CXL swapped explosives for paint and became CIL which ultimately closed in 1984.
