AUTHENTIC QUILL BASKET ON DISPLAY Quill work on birch bark Basket was a long and tedious process but provided Ojibwa with baskets that were very important for hunter-gatherers. Birch bark could only be collected during the spring. Skill was required to strip the bark while leaving the tree intact. Porcupine quills were stripped, washed and sorted according to size. Baskets then had to be shaped, design drawn with an awl and quills worked wet for greater pliability. The Ojibwa stored fruits and berries in the Quill Basket to supplement their diet. Please visit the West Parry Sound District Museum on Tower Hill or visit www.wpsdm.ca. Buy our CD! SUPPORT LOCAL BANDS! While in Downtown Parry Sound, drop by White Squall at 19 James. Touring the Fall Colours After the Fall... WHEN AND WHERE TO SEE FALL COLOURS? Depending on your latitude, fall colours happen at different times of the year. Normally October is the best time for viewing in the Parry Sound Area, but leaves are already falling. What is the best time predicted by experts? This year, Ontario Parks suggest the best viewing time may be the first two weeks of October. As for where, tours down Highway 124 or along Highway 141 or up Highway 518 can be spectacular! Don’t forget McDougall Road, but do drive carefully along this windy path and one lane bridge. Oastler Park is on old Highway 69. Killbear Park is off Highway 559.
